Match the option to your arrival time

Daytime arrivals usually have the widest choice: trains and airport limousine buses run to a published timetable, taxi ranks are staffed, and ride apps have cars available. Late evening and overnight arrivals narrow the choice sharply — most airport limousine buses and JR limited express services have already stopped, leaving a taxi, a pre-booked transfer, or a sleep-at-airport option as the realistic paths to your hotel. Build the decision around your actual landing window, not the time you wish you were landing.

Late-night and early-morning arrivals

At major hubs such as Haneda and Narita, regular taxi ranks run 24 hours and a 22:00–05:00 night surcharge is added to the metered fare. Haneda's last Keikyu train toward central Tokyo is around 00:08, and its first morning train toward central Tokyo leaves around 05:26, with similar late-night and first-train windows for Tokyo Monorail and Limousine Bus routes. Outside the Tokyo area, regional airports can have thinner night coverage: the last bus and train often leave earlier than at Haneda or Narita, and while taxi ranks are usually staffed, a long-distance metered fare or a pre-booked transfer is the safer default. Always check the airport's own current timetable for your terminal, your date, and your direction before relying on any of these.

What to do if the driver or pickup is late

Save the booking reference, the operator's local Japanese phone number, and the meeting-point photo as soon as you clear customs. If the pre-booked driver is not at the agreed spot within the grace period stated in your booking, call the operator's number first, then the airport's general taxi desk as a fallback. For a taxi app, cancel and re-request if the car does not move, and note the cancellation fee rules in the app before you tap.
